Discovering the Bareja Parshwanath Temple

The Bareja Parshwanath Temple, situated in the serene village of Barej in Gujarat’s Porbandar district, is a significant Jain pilgrimage site. The temple houses an 83 cm high black idol of Bhagwan Parshwanath in the Padmasana posture, uniquely crafted from sand.


Location and Accessibility

Barej is an ancient village in the Saurashtra region of Gujarat. The temple is approximately 42 kilometers from Porbandar railway station, 36 kilometers from Mangrol, and 46 kilometers from Junagadh, making it accessible for pilgrims traveling by road or rail.


Historical Significance

According to legend, a merchant’s ship became inexplicably immobile while at sea. Upon investigation, he discovered a captivating idol of Bhagwan Parshwanath beneath the waters. Overjoyed, he brought the idol to Barej village and constructed a beautiful temple to enshrine it. The present temple was rebuilt by Seth Bhimji Kalyanji of Porbandar in Vikram Samvat 1900, with the idol ceremoniously installed by Acharya Shri Jineshvarsurishvarji in Vikram Samvat 1905.

The temple showcases traditional Jain architectural elements, with intricate carvings and a serene ambiance that enhances the spiritual experience for visitors. The idol’s unique composition from sand adds to its allure and significance.


Visiting Information

Pilgrims can plan their visit by traveling to Porbandar, Mangrol, or Junagadh, and then proceeding to Barej village. The temple is managed by the Shri Porbandar Jain Tapagaccha Sangh Trust, ensuring well-maintained facilities for devotees.
